FASTDIE RECORDS

I first heard of FASTDIE RECORDS (a DIY Malaysian label) when I was searching the net for Agathocles releases I may have missed and I came across the Ag/Hatred Division split on FxDxRx. I looked up a few of their bands on youtube and was completely blown away by Shitnoise Bastards (raw oldschool grind/noise) and Diseksa (old school grind). So I contacted Fastdie Records and placed a order. I got the Ag/ Hatred Division split, the Diseksa/Gripe  split, the Diseksa/Terlarang split and the Shitnoise Bastards demo cdr. All were excellent! The following is a interview done with Hazree half of FastDie records and the drummer for Shitnoise Bastards, Diseksa and Hatred Division.

When and why did you decide to start Fastdie Rec?
A: FASTDIE RECORDS officially started in 2007. Before that I ran the ITCHFLESH RECORDS. Under ITCHFLESH RECORDS I just made one release only DISLOCATED CEREBRUM (malaysia death metal) demo cd-r in 2005. After that I quit, then I start FASTDIE RECORDS with my partner Oggy from TERLARANG (mal thrash/grind). For the early days we only planned to make our local band release, then we started with TERLARANG demo cd-r 2008 and then DISEKSA demo cd-r 2008. This is FASTDIE RECORDS first  two releases. Then in time, by time FASTDIE RECORDS has made release involved the bands from worldwide.

Did it cost much to start the label? Did you receive any financial aid from the government?
A: Yes we realize money is always the big problem when running label and distro. That's why when we started we were only able to make cd-r releases, because I am very poor (still poor till now). Then I slowly, step by steps collect the finances. Then I made pro cd releases, protape releases and starting this year we join the co-release project to release 7' releases. It's hard to keep your finances stable when your doing a label and distro. But for me, I'm not looking to make any high profit with my label. This is my passion and  am interested for sure to put bands stuff (mostly all my friends band). It shit, no co-operated with the government and our government is totally corrupted.

Is the label strictly grindcore/powerviolence or do plan on working with other forms of music?
A: FASTDIE RECORDS is not strictly for grind/PV stuff only, we also released some thrashpunk, hardcorepunk, thrashcore, bands too. But we are more interested to make release for grindcore bands, but our distro has got everything from punk-rock, hardcore, death/black metal, heavy metal, thrash, crust/d-beat, to grind/noise. Yes till now we always looking forward to make more release including for old school death metal bands too. But maybe FASTDIE RECORDS is not seen as very 'metal' thats why we have got no interest from any metal bands from our local also from international. But we just not interested to any death/metalcore. Cause it's shit.

You play in Hatred Division, Diseksa, and Shitnoise Bastards are they all still active and can you tell me a little about each?
A: Yes I'm the drummer for these three bands for the moment. DISEKSA (mal crust raw grind) started in 2008. Got many changing line ups till today, but the band is still active. Diseksa has got a few previous split release in tape and cd-r format, plus in very near time soon we will release the 1st 7' split with NEON HOLE (u.s grind/doom/metal) also split 7' with our local well-known grind master SMG, and not to forget to mention Diseksa also will be release a split tape with the very best mincecore pioneer and legend AGATHOCLES.
2nd band is HATRED DIVISION (mal raw grind hyper speed shit). This is a project bands that features band members from SMG, DISEKSA and HELLTERROR (mal grindcore). This band was formed in early 2011, and till now has already got one demo tape and three split releases with AGATHOCLES, GORGONIZED DORKS (u.s noisecore) & UNHOLY GRAVE (jpn grind godz) split 7'. Many more upcoming split release will be out soon.

The 3rd band is SHITNOISE BASTARDS (mal raw grind/noise shithead).also project band feat band members from DISEKSA, MAGNITIZDAT (mal grind/metal) & ANAK ROSAK (mal thrashpunk RIP). This bands was formed in early 2012. We already have one demo cd-r and tape, Two split cd-r releases with BONEACHE (brasil pathology grind/noise) & JEFFREY DAHMER (indonesia raw grind). Recent projects in working now are a split tape with Malaysia noisecore/grind legend DOSA will be release very near time soon,  plus split tape with U.S old school death metal/sludge/grind THE PATH,  and we have got other upcoming split tape with CRUTCH (u.s PV/grind) and CORRUPT HUMANITY (Scotland crust raw grind). Its very easy to, enjoy to play in bands when all the line up is the close and best friends. We are having fun and really enjoy our session with the bands. If you guys have a time, do check these three bands. We need more exposure from U.S. and Europe grindcore scenes.
How is the Malaysian scene? How big is it?  Do you get much support locally? Is it a mix of both punk and metal fans?
A: The truth is I'm not the scenester. I do not go to gig everyweek, sometimes I went to gig three times in three months. But i can still tell you a little bit about the scene here.. DIY community here is doing good for sure. They always organized small gig every week, doing food not bombs, and other activities. We got many of crust/d-beat/punk/hardcore/thrash/ here, but  have got few grind bands. Maybe you has heard some of these grind band from Malaysia such as SMG (our local grind master with tons of releases), DOSA (old school noisegrind), PSYCHOTIC SUFFERANCE (noisegrind), MASS SEPERATION (crustgrind), TORTURE INCIDENT (raw grind RIP), TERLARANG (thrash/grind) just list few. Two years ago I  released a compilation tape featuring 15 grindcore bands from Malaysia, and I plan to put out vol.2 soon. We have many fanzines here. Also got the old fanzine that still exist till today too. Also got the #1 issue then gone too. I'm not doing any fanzine, because I think I'm not talented in fanzine making and writing. It needs high committment to complete. But I really enjoy reading the old days fanzines with the typewriter writing. Its very cool for me. Glad I still keep the old fanzine in my safety box. haha.

Yeah sometime we got the mix of punk, metal, and grindcore gigs here. But metal scene here, they can't accept and they don't want to join with the d.i.y hardcore punk scene. They a lot of ego with their music, fashion and ethic. But not all metal bands here are with this attitude, we still got some good and friendly black/death metal bands who plays gigs with grind, crust, punk bands here.We just have our gap with 'true' metal bands/veterans cause they said d.i.y hardcore punk scene is bullshit.

Is it easy to put together shows? Do you have venues? Do you have problems with the authority when it comes to shows?
A: Here it is easy to set small shows, but we just don't have many places and venues. We have the very well-known d.i.y HCpunk venus called RUMAH API here. This is the regular venue for the d.i.y hcpunk shows. Plus many bands came touring to S.E.Asia and have played here. Yes, we don't have many places/venues to set up shows here and this causes the problem with the authority. Some times they come and raid the shows and ask us to close. So that's why we just set up the small show here. Small shows but its still good shows for sure.

Have you toured outside Malaysia? Do you get a lot of support from other countries?  Do you get a lot of support via Internet?
A: I'm still not doing any tours outside Malaysia and also tour in Malaysia cause my working time is not giving me a chance to do the tour haha(fuck).
Yes I'm very glad and lucky because we have got the good feedback and support from Europe and U.S. labels and friends. They are really interested and they really want to help. I feels very happy and am very appreciated to them. Because Malaysia is just the small country, I'm sure many people in Europe, and the U.S. have never heard about Malaysia. Luckly we got the internet nowdays, so I can make and keep contact with all friends from worlwide. Yes I have really got great support from the internet, specially when they contact me about to buying the FASTDIE RECORDS stuff. This is great when the small label from small country get the support worldwide. this encourages me to put out more releases in future.

Do you get a lot of outside tours band from other countries touring Malaysia?
A: Yes we have got many bands from Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, U.S, and Europe who have did S.E Asia tours and came to play in Malaysia. The kids here are very supportive, mosh hard for sure. haha. Also we get a lot of death metal bands who come to play in Malaysia such as WARBRINGER, NAPALM DEATH, DYING FETUS, HATE ETERNAL and more, just list few only.

What are some of the Malaysian bands, you would recommend?
A: I will suggest to you grind/PV bands only cause i involved more into grindcore scene. We
got many good bands from Malaysia you can check out GYMNASTIC SKULL WHISTLING (mal PV/grind), COMPULSION TO KILL (mal grindviolence), TERLARANG(mal thrash/grind), DEFORMING TORTURE (mal sickfast grindcore), SMG, PSYCHOTIC SUFFERANCE (mal noise/grind), ROTGUT (mal goregrind). Just listed a few only, but for sure we still got more good bands from here.

What can we look for to in the future from Fastdie?
A: We got many upcoming release from FxDxR  soon. Mostly all releases are involved the FASTDIE RECORDS bands such as DISEKSA/SMG split 7', DISEKSA/AGATHOCLES split tape, SHITNOISE BASTARDS/THE PATH split tape, SHITNOISE BASTARDS/DOSA split tape, HATRED DIVISION/GYMNASTIC SKULL WHISTLING split tape and many more. Morbid Angel, Grave, and Dark Funeral 9/22/12 Louisville KY

I've seen a lot of death metal shows as of late. Mainly because grindcore bands don't play the Midwest often. As far as death metal bands go Morbid Angel and Grave rank as two of the best in my opinion. If I had a list of my top ten death metal albums, both Alter of Madness and Into The Grave would be on it. Alters of Madness would probably be #1.
First up was Grave. Concentrating on older material, mostly from the Into The Grave album. Playing Deformed, In Love, Day of Mourning, Hating Life, Into the Grave and Extremely Rotten Flesh all off that first album! The set was rounded off by other classics like Turning Black and newer tracks like Epos. Truly a great set. The only problem I had with it was it was way to short.
Dark Funeral played next and I have to admit that I don't know a lot about them, other than the fact that the guy who sang on Hypocrisy's first album was once a long time member. To be fair I am also not a huge black metal fan and the bands I do like are of the rawer persuasion. They played a good set that was maybe a bit to long, for me.
Morbid Angel like Grave played a set that was mostly dedicated to their older material. I don't think they played anything from the Tucker era. Alters of Madness was well represented with Maze of Tourment, Immortal Rites, Blasphemy, Lord of All Fevers, and Chapel of Ghouls. They played God of Emptiness, Angel of Disease, & Rapture from Covenant. A few from Blessed and Domination, the rest the set was from the new album. The highlight of the night was just watching Trey play, the guy is amazing. I just wish they would have had Sandoval and Brunelle back in the lineup.

MONSTERS CLUB trailer

This is a Japanese interpretation of the Ted Kaczynski (aka Una-Bomber) story by director Toshiaki Toyoda (Blue Spring, Pornstar/Tokyo Rampage). Given the full Japanese make-over complete with ghosts and transvestites. The movie is beautifully done and done in a way only Japanese directors can. It is not as far-out as Sasaki's Crazy Lips (a must see) but not a normal interpretation either.

Henry Fonda

Henry Fonda is a powerviolence band from Berlin Germany. I think this was the last interview we did for issue 2 (2009).
They got back with us fast  and with great answers.

B: First what is the PxVx/Grindcore scene like in Germany?
HF: Well to be honest there is no real powerviolence scene over here. I mean we have a handfull of bands that play or that played powerviolence but those bands are mostly the only ones of the their style on a show line up. There is a cool scene for trash stuff and a lot of bands popping up from time to time everywhere in Germany.
Go check out Ape Attack, A Bit of Braindead, The Omnipresent Desease, Nihil Baxter, Over the Top, Memorial, Infested. some of them got small powerviolence influences but mostly play fast trash hardcore. For grindcore there is a lot of stuff going on here but to be honest i cant realy give any good infos about that cause we mostly play the hardcore shows and grind bands seem to play the metal shows. Anyway if you want to know more about fast german bands check out these: Quattro Stagioni, Cold War, A Bit of Braindead, Ape Attack, Omnipresent Desease, Hungry Lungs, Spastix, Bob Roony, Over the Top, Infected, Memorial to name a few that came into my mind right now. For grind check Sanitys Dawn, Cancer Clan, Cyness, Yacoepse.
B: What bands influenced you guys when you were starting?
HF: I guess everyone of us got his own influences but we were all listening to a lot of more traditional PV stuff to the beginning like infest, Spazz or Neanderthal and realy got into newer stuff like Hummingbird of Death, Punch, Weekend Nachos later. for my part im realy influenced by older Magrudergrind and Quattro Stagioni, our drummer is more into d-beat and trash, rich our guitarplayer is heavily into Infest and thomas loves the new Coke Bust and holds up the flag for traditional grind stuff like Napalm Death or Phobia. But we are not limited to that. Everyone is active in other bands that play completly diffrent stuff like for example tech metal, atmospheric sludge or some straight forward hardcore stuff so we draw our influences from a lot of other crap and even a lot of non hardcore stuff. also most of the band got a faible for old german punk.
B: The song titles seem a bit humorous, would you say they have a social/political message, does the band have any sort of message that drives it?
HF: Well our lyrics are realy important to us even if it looks like joking because songs tend to be so short there is always a message behind it. There are a few songs about the so called mainstream hardcore fashion thing, songs that deal with topics as homophobia or racism, songs about how we hate work, songs about the current police state thing that goes on over here or a song about squatting. We even have songs about powerviolence itself or pizza. So we are not limited to be a 100 percent serious band but most of our lyrics are serious and not funny at all. Its important for us to speak about certain topics at shows like violenct dancing and sexism in our scene for example and we like to have a dialouge with people cause we think that punk is about sharing ideas and not only consuming shit and going back to all day life after a show. We have lyric sheets with english explanations that we hand out at shows so people know what we sing about. We have them uploaded on our myspace so get them if you like.
B: You seem pretty lacks when it comes to copyrights, how do you feel about copyright laws. Do you think the internet has changed the way bands look at copyrights?
HF: To be honest I dont care if people download our songs or play covers or use them for compilations or stuff like that. I mean this is not the mainstream. No evil music buisness shit. We dont make a living out of this and thats why we dont need to care about that. for example downloading music. Major labels and pseudo major labels they say that it is false to do so but for smaller bands this realy helpful. I mean fanzines are not that popular anymore (wich sucks) and I dont find them often at shows specialy here in Berlin and there has to be something that keeps you informed about music and politics. So there is the internet with a massive amount of blogs, sites, myspace profiles and so on. everyone can take part in it and you get information realy fast. Its a usefull tool. A friend told you about band xy you go and check them out download their demo and if you like them you go see a show or buy something from them to support them if you like. I dont think that this is false. The other thing we do and thats what you mean I guess is the whole trading thing. I mean  I was realy into trading releases a while ago and the thing that always pissed me off was the postage rates. So why not making it available on the internet and people can make their own copies or print their own shirts? I mean this is good for the distro itself cause money comes in to support new projects and releases and this is good for the band cause it is free promotion and free distribution for them. If the band gets some tapes for themselfs then for me this works fine. I hope this was understandable if not drop me a line and i will awnser it.
B: LoFi vesres studio recording? Proes and cons to each? Do you run your own label?
HF:  Well studios cost money and thats were it mostly stops. We are poor we try to finance our band with the money we make selling merch. So there is not enough money to go to a studio so we do it ourselfs. Rich and me are trained a bit in recording and we have some shitty equip that makes it possible to make recordings for Fonda and other bands. The result is not always great but its listenable for us so its ok. Lo-fi recording can be done for free so its always a good solution for smaller runs of releases (the more diy way) but they mostly not good for representing a band. Good quality recording is mostly expensive and dont has to be representive for a band too but i guess its more fun for your ears. Next time we record we try to record  everything live in a studio so because we dont use overdubs we should be able to get through our shit in time and without loosing too much money.
About the label thing. everyone except francois our drummer is running a label. Thomas is running his thing called Noones Innocent Records, Rich and me are running various small run labels such as Yehonala tapes, Obi Wahn, Toxic Kids.
B:  It looks like you guys are planning a European tour, any thoughts about coming to the USA?
HF: Yeah we are planning a us tour right now. We think about coming over for september 2010 and play a east cost tour. so it is in the starts and we just need to start booking shows and fix the timeplan ... So if anyone that is reading this can help out with a show on the eastcost or got any good tips for us or email lists or stuff like that get in touch with us we could need some help. tom@yehonalatapes.de
B: Do you guys have jobs, were you able to work them out with the tour if so? What is the average age of the band members?
HF: Well Francois is 20 right now, Thomas is 27 (not sure) and Rich and me are 23. All of us got jobs and its quite diffucult to get free from work sometimes but it always works out. We realy want to play as many shows as we can if there is a show in the week we play it and go to work tired the next day. Thats it. Most of our free days we have at work we use for playing tours. Work sucks haha
B: Why Henry Fonda for the name or was it just random?
HF: It was more random I guess. Rich and me came up with some names and we liked that one. But I realy like that film with Charles Bronson and Fonda... Dont know what its called in English.
B: What are your future plans for the band?
HF: Well European tour, US tour, releasing a shitload of wax, writing a shitload of songs so we can do so, South East Asia tour and more shows outside of that shithole Berlin.
B: Any last words or anything you would like to let people know?
HF: Good luck with your zine. Thanks a lot for the intrest and the questions i hope the awnsers are understandable. up the punx.
